About Sea Buckthorn Leaf Tea.
Most people know sea buckthorn for its orange berries, but in the Himalayas the leaves have long been dried and brewed too. Sea buckthorn leaf tea is mild, slightly grassy and earthy, a little like green tea without the bitterness. It has no caffeine, as the leaves are not from the tea plant.
How to brew sea buckthorn leaf tea
- Put one teaspoon of leaves in a cup or teapot.
- Pour over 200 ml of water just off the boil.
- Cover and steep for 5 minutes. Steep longer for a stronger cup.
- Strain and drink as it is, or add honey, lemon or a slice of ginger.
You can steep the same leaves a second time; the second cup is lighter.
Iced sea buckthorn tea
Brew it double strength, let it cool, then pour over ice with lemon and a little honey. For a bright orange twist, add a tablespoon of sea buckthorn juice.
When people drink it
Because it is caffeine-free, sea buckthorn leaf tea suits the evening as well as the morning. Many people drink it after meals in place of a second cup of chai.
