About Indigo Leaf Powder.
Indigo (*Indigofera tinctoria*), known in India as neel, is the plant that gave the world blue dye. Its dried, ground leaves are also one of the oldest natural ways to colour hair dark brown to black, used together with henna.
Our indigo powder is 100% indigo leaves. No PPD, ammonia or chemical dye is added.
How natural hair colour with henna and indigo works
Henna stains hair red-orange. Indigo stains it blue. Applied one after the other, the red and blue combine into brown to black. That's why indigo is almost always used after henna.
The two-step method (for dark brown to black)
Day 1, henna:
- Mix henna powder with water into a yoghurt-like paste and rest it for 4 to 6 hours.
- Apply to clean, dry hair. Leave for 2 to 3 hours, then rinse with water only.
Same day or next day, indigo:
- Mix indigo powder with lukewarm water and a pinch of salt into a smooth paste. Use it straight away: indigo loses strength if left standing.
- Apply over the hennaed hair, roots first. Leave for 1 to 2 hours.
- Rinse with water only. Don't shampoo for 48 hours while the colour settles.
How much indigo do I need?
About 100 g for shoulder-length hair and 200 g for long or thick hair. Use the same amount of henna.
Good to know
- The colour deepens over 2 to 3 days. It may look slightly blue at first.
- Indigo alone, without henna, can give a blue-green tint.
- Indigo stains skin and surfaces. Wear gloves and apply oil along your hairline.
- Do a patch test 48 hours before first use. For external use only.
How to use it
Mix with warm water, apply to henna-coloured hair for 1 to 2 hours, rinse. Do a patch test first. For external use only.

Apply henna first and rinse. Then mix indigo with lukewarm water and a pinch of salt, apply straight away for 1 to 2 hours, and rinse with water only. Avoid shampoo for 48 hours.
Can I use indigo without henna?
Indigo alone can turn hair blue-green, especially on grey hair. It is meant to be used after henna.

It fades slowly over 4 to 6 weeks, mostly at new growth. Many people touch up the roots monthly.
Why does my hair look slightly blue?

Do I need a patch test?
Yes. Apply a little paste behind your ear or on your inner arm and wait 48 hours before colouring your hair.
