About Reetha Powder.
Reetha, also called aritha or soapnut (*Sapindus mukorossi*), is the dried fruit of the soapberry tree. Its shell contains natural saponins, which foam in water. Long before bottled shampoo, Indian families washed hair, silk and even jewellery with reetha.
Our reetha powder is 100% soapnut, dried and ground. No soap, fragrance, SLS or preservatives are added.
How to wash hair with reetha powder
Quick method (paste):
- Mix 2 tablespoons of reetha powder with warm water into a runny paste.
- Wet your hair, apply the paste to the scalp and lengths, and massage gently. It lathers lightly.
- Leave for 2 to 3 minutes, then rinse very well.
Traditional method (liquid):
- Soak 2 tablespoons each of reetha, shikakai and amla powders in two cups of water overnight.
- In the morning, boil for 10 minutes, cool, and strain through a cloth.
- Use the liquid as shampoo. Keep the rest in the fridge for up to three days.
How much lather will I get?
Less than bottled shampoo, and that is normal. Reetha foams gently. More lather doesn't mean cleaner hair.
Other uses
Reetha liquid is also used at home to wash woollens and silk, and to clean silver and gold jewellery.
Before you use it
- Keep it out of your eyes: soapnut stings like any cleanser. Rinse with plenty of water if it gets in.
- Do a patch test on your inner arm first if you have sensitive skin.
- For external use only.
How to use it

Questions
How do I use reetha powder for hair wash?
Mix 2 tablespoons with warm water into a runny paste, massage into wet hair and scalp, leave for 2 to 3 minutes and rinse well. Or soak it overnight with shikakai and amla, boil, strain and use the liquid.
Can I use reetha alone or do I need shikakai?
Reetha alone cleans well. Most people mix it with shikakai and amla, which together make the traditional Indian three-herb wash.
Why doesn't reetha foam like shampoo?
Its natural saponins give a gentle lather, much less than shampoo. That is normal and still cleans your hair.
How often can I wash my hair with reetha?
Two to three times a week works for most people, the same as a regular hair wash.
Does reetha sting the eyes?
Yes, like any cleanser. Keep your eyes closed while rinsing, and wash with plenty of water if it gets in.
Can I use reetha on coloured or hennaed hair?
Yes. Many people use reetha because it is gentle on henna. Wait a day or two after a henna or indigo application before washing.
What else can reetha be used for?
At home, reetha liquid is also used to wash woollens and silk and to clean gold and silver jewellery.
How should I store it?
Keep the pack sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and always use a dry spoon.
