About Shikakai Powder.
Shikakai (*Acacia concinna*) means "fruit for hair", and that is how it has been used in India for centuries. The dried pods of this climbing shrub are ground into a light-brown powder that cleans hair gently, with a soft, mild lather.
Our shikakai powder is 100% shikakai pods, dried and ground. No soap, fragrance or preservatives are added.
How to wash hair with shikakai
As a paste:
- Mix 2 to 3 tablespoons with warm water into a smooth, runny paste.
- Apply to wet hair and scalp, massage gently, and leave for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
The traditional three-herb wash:
Soak 2 tablespoons each of shikakai, reetha and amla in two cups of water overnight. Boil for 10 minutes, cool, strain, and use the liquid as shampoo. Our Natural Hair Wash Trio has all three.
Shikakai or reetha?
Reetha gives more lather; shikakai is milder and leaves hair feeling softer. Used together, they balance each other, which is why the two are almost always paired.
Tips
- Shikakai is slightly acidic and can feel drying on very dry hair. Add a spoon of curd or aloe vera gel to the paste, or oil your hair the night before.
- Rinse well: leftover powder can feel gritty.
Before you use it
Keep it out of your eyes, as it stings. Do a patch test first if your skin is sensitive. For external use only.
How to use it

Questions
How do I use shikakai powder for hair?
Mix 2 to 3 tablespoons with warm water into a runny paste, massage into wet hair and scalp, leave for 3 to 5 minutes and rinse well.
Can I use shikakai daily?
Two to three times a week suits most people. On very dry hair, add curd or aloe vera gel to the paste.
What is the difference between shikakai and reetha?
Reetha (soapnut) lathers more. Shikakai is milder and leaves hair softer. They are usually used together, often with amla.
Does shikakai foam?
Only lightly. It is a gentle natural cleanser, so expect much less foam than shampoo.
Is shikakai good for coloured or hennaed hair?
Many people with henna use shikakai because it is gentle. Wait a day or two after henna or indigo before washing.
What is shikakai called in English?
Its botanical name is Acacia concinna. It is sometimes called soap pod.
How should I store it?
Keep the pack sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and always use a dry spoon.
