About Ashwagandha Root Powder.
Ashwagandha (*Withania somnifera*) is a small shrub with orange-red berries that grows across the dry parts of India, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. It is also known as asgandh in Hindi and Indian winter cherry in English. The root is the part that has been used in Indian homes and in Ayurveda for centuries.
Our ashwagandha powder is 100% ashwagandha root, dried and ground. It is not mixed with leaves, stems or fillers.
How ashwagandha powder is traditionally taken
The classic way is with milk:
- Warm one cup of milk (dairy, almond or oat).
- Whisk in half a teaspoon of ashwagandha powder.
- Add a pinch of cardamom, nutmeg or turmeric.
- Simmer for a minute, then sweeten with honey, jaggery or date powder once it cools slightly.
Many people have it in the evening. You can also stir it into warm water with honey, or blend it into a banana and date smoothie.
What does it taste like?
Earthy and slightly bitter, with a strong smell. The name comes from Sanskrit and refers to that smell. Milk, spices and a little sweetness soften it a lot.
Ashwagandha with shatavari
Ashwagandha and shatavari are often taken together in Indian homes. If you take both, use a smaller amount of each.
